Prevent mosquito bites

Mosquitoes that transmit malaria and Japanese encephalitis bite between sunset and sunrise. Mosquitoes that cause dengue fever and yellow fever bite during the day. This means that, in countries where both illnesses occur, you must take precautions 24 hours a day.

You can protect yourself against mosquitoes (and other insect) bites by taking the following precautions:
1. Cover up (long sleeves, long trousers, shoes and socks).
2. Use insect repellent on exposed parts (face, hands and ankles). Repellents containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) are the most effective. Various brands are available.
3. Use a mosquito net, preferably an impregnated net. The net must be impregnated every six months, and after washing.

An impregnated net is particularly recommended for:
1. visits to areas with resistant tropical malaria,
2. for vulnerable travellers (pregnant women, children, etc.),
3. for people travelling under primitive conditions,
4. for those staying for long periods.
