Ground Handling International in Vienna
Schiphol Cargo participated in the Ground Handling International Conference held this year in Vienna from 29 November - 2 December under the motto: ‘Change the business model - or the business?’ A key topic of discussion was whether the ground handlers’ traditional business models are still sufficient to meet the demands set by current developments in aviation or if steps should be taken to adapt to a changing environment.
A second point, which has proven to be no less important, addresses the issue of sustainability as included in the ACN (Air Cargo Netherlands) long-range business plan. The government, as well as partners and customers, are asking more and more frequently how businesses are contributing to the basic principles of people - planet – profit. Investing in electrically-powered ground service equipment is one of the strategies in the ground handling business that could lead to a reduction of the branch’s carbon footprint and to the improvement of working conditions for the staff – while also reducing costs. Various showcases confirm that this is already possible. Another project still to be developed is the ‘Taxibot’ project, which involves the possibility of towing aircraft to the runway instead of having them taxi on their own power to get there. A number of companies, including Airbus, have been looking into this seriously and have already built the first test model of a tractor that could handle this task.
