Schiphol expansion at New York JFK good for 10,000 jobs
Schiphol is planning an extensive expansion at New York JFK. ’This investment will exceed the one billion mark and is expected to generate at least 10,000 new jobs‘, says Jos Nijhuis, CEO of Schiphol Group.
The start of construction is contingent on Schiphol being able to obtain the necessary permits. Also, several details still need to be finalised to suit our customer’s – i.e., the airlines’ – wishes. ‘All final decisions must be made by spring’, announced Nijhuis.
Schiphol achieved ten per cent growth last year, processing almost 50 million passengers. ‘The airport can still grow in respect of the number of air transport movements. If we start now, we will have additional capacity in four-to-five years’ time.’ Nijhuis does not anticipate the airport’s success being thwarted by the economic crisis. ‘I don’t foresee anything happening to curb our growth, but you never know. Of course, we ourselves are emerging from the crisis and we’re winning market share,’ Nijhuis said referring to Schiphol’s luring back of passengers who had taken their business to other airports in Belgium and, especially, Germany.
