Noise and disturbance reduction
We are committed to reducing noise disturbance and improving the quality of life in the airport’s environs. We monitor noise levels on a daily basis and take measures where necessary. Our aim is to avoid the statutory limit values for noise impact being exceeded.
Differentiation in airport charges based on noise categories is one of our measures. Very quiet aircraft receive a discount on airport charges, while relatively noisy aircraft have to pay a surcharge, and an extra surcharge for nights. In this way we are encouraging certain air traffic to come to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and discouraging other air traffic.
Sources of noise
There are various sources of noise at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The main sources are aircraft landing, taxiing and taking off, and aircraft engines on the engine test site. Noise is also produced by traffic, equipment and operational processes at and around the airport.
Noise monitoring system
You can find out the present distribution of aircraft noise for the runways that are currently in use by visiting the FANOMOS website (Flight Tracking and Noise Monitoring System).
Local Community Contact Centre Schiphol
If you have any questions regarding aircraft noise, you can submit these to the Local Community Contact Centre Schiphol (Bas). BAS is the local contact centre for information and complaints about air traffic at and around Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Bas is a joint initiative by Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) and Schiphol Group.
Consultative bodies
Schiphol has two important bodies through which consults with municipalities and local resident representatives: the Schiphol Regional Consultative Committee (CROS) and the Alders Platform.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol participates in plenary meetings and various working groups of the CROS. Through consultation between the parties involved, the CROS aims to foster airport use that recognises the diverse range of interests. In the CROS, local residents, administrators and sector partners cooperate in project groups and working groups on issues concerning the airport.
The Alders Platform is a consultative body that advises the government on the balance between aviation expansion at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, disturbance restriction and the quality of the residential environment.
On 1 October 2008 the Alders Platform participants presented their medium-term recommendation (2010 to 2018/2020) to the minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management and the minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. The recommendation consists of three covenants that together form a coherent and indivisible package of agreements and measures. In February 2009 the Dutch Lower House reached an agreement based on the recommendations put forth by the Alders Platform.
