Start of the expansion of Terminal 4 at John F Kennedy Airport New York

Today the official green light was given at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport for the construction activities to expand Terminal 4. The festive event was attended by Jos Nijhuis, President & CEO of the Schiphol Group,  Richard Anderson, CEO of Delta Air Lines and Chris Ward, Executive Director of the New York and New Jersey Port Authority.

The expansion of Terminal 4 will entail nine new international gates, additional baggage space, customs and border-security facilities. The first phase of the expansion project is expected to be completed in 2013. The expansion will make Delta Airlines Terminal 4's biggest customer.

'The start of the construction work shows that we will not leave it at words alone and fully support this project. We are also very proud of the cooperation we are enjoying on this project with Delta, a leading member of the SkyTeam. The improvements brought about by this expansion will enable us to be of even better service to the customers of Terminal 4', says Jos Nijhuis. 'Thanks to this expansion, Delta and its partner Air France-KLM will be able to strengthen its North Atlantic network even more via the airports of Amsterdam, Paris and New York. Our "added value" as a leading airport operator is that we ensure perfect coordination between the processes that a world-class travel experience calls for and for the flexible and cost-effective provision of services to our airlines.'

Richard Anderson, CEO of Delta, agrees: 'We have been working towards this for many years now and are very enthusiastic about the possibility of extending Terminal 4. The project is part of a number of large-scale investments in New York and will provide tremendous added value for our customers and employees in the decades to come. The extended hub terminal will provide all the necessary modern conveniences and satisfy the needs of the most competitive and largest air supply market in the world'.
