Green light for expansion of Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy Airport

International terminal to become Delta Airlines hub in New York
Today the mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, announced that international Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy Airport is to be expanded substantially. This was agreed between the New York and New Jersey airport authorities on the one hand and Delta Airlines and JFK International Air Terminal LLC (JFKIAT) on the other. JFKIAT is a wholly owned subsidiary of Schiphol USA, the airport operator and manager of Terminal 4, which was opened in May 2001.
Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement during a press conference held in City Hall especially for this occasion. Those present at the press conference included Richard Anderson CEO Delta Airlines, Governor David Paterson, Chris Ward Executive Director of the Port Authority, Camiel Eurlings, dutch Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management and Jos Nijhuis, President & CEO of Schiphol Group and Pieter Verboom, CFO of Schiphol Group.
Delta Airlines will be Terminal 4's biggest customer following its expansion. The expansion will entail nine new international gates, additional baggage space, customs and border-security facilities, etc. Construction work will begin in late 2010. The first phase of the expansion project is expected to be completed in 2013.
Mr Nijhuis, President & CEO of Schiphol Group commented: "Schiphol is honoured that Delta has chosen Terminal 4 to serve as the main hub of its New York operations. Delta Airlines is a key member of the SkyTeam alliance and together with its partner Air France-KLM this will further strengthen their North Atlantic network facilitated by the airports of Amsterdam, Paris and New York. Our added value as a leading airport operator is our ability to harmonize the processes needed to achieve a world class travel experience and serve our airlines in a cost effective and flexible way."
Terminal 4
In 2009, 9.5 million passengers travelled via Terminal 4. As 'terminal of choice', Terminal 4 will continue to offer its facilities to other carriers as well as to Delta Airlines.
"More than 10 years ago Schiphol was invited to apply its expertise in airport infrastructure to the construction of a new terminal at JFK airport. This construction project was one of the largest public-private projects in the United States and it was the first time that a foreign airport was involved in the building and running of a terminal in this country. This investment of Delta Airlines in Terminal 4 to expand its hub activities in New York clearly reflects her confidence in the success of this terminal", says Mr Verboom, CFO of Schiphol Group.
Richard Anderson, CEO Delta Airlines: "JFK airport is one of the most important international gateways in the US and is therefore set to become one of our major hubs. Following years of discussions, we are delighted to have reached an agreement with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, JFKIAT and Schiphol USA. Thanks to this agreement, we can use JFK airport to respond to the demands of one of the world's largest and most competitive airline markets in the 21st century."
Financing
The expansion of Terminal 4 amounts to an investment of 1.2 billion dollars. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is financing this sum through a bond issue.
