More cancellations expected at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Joint press release by Air Traffic Control the Netherlands, KLM and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
Based on current reports, it appears that from 14:00 this afternoon air traffic at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will be increasingly affected by the cloud of volcanic ash produced by the volcanic eruption in the area of the Eyjafallajoekull glacier in Iceland. The cloud of ash is dispersing towards the south and is expected to lead to further flight cancellations at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
The scale of the disruption is expected to become clearer during the course of the day.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and the airlines urge passengers to keep a close eye on the reports, to contact their airline and to check whether their flight is able to depart before leaving for the airport.
A large part of the Northern European air space has already been closed to air traffic until further notice, leading to cancellations and delays to a number of flights departing from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
With 43.6 million passengers and more than 1.3 million tonnes of cargo, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was the fifth largest airport in Europe in terms of passenger volume in 2009 and the third largest in terms of cargo volume. More than 90 scheduled airlines link the airport with direct flights to 284 destinations around the world. This makes Amsterdam Airport Schiphol one of Europe's four largest main ports or hubs, and one of the two European home bases of Air France-KLM and the SkyTeam alliance. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is also a driving economic force for the region. More than 60,000 people work at the airport. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was the winner of the 'ACI EUROPE Best Airport Award' in 2009.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is part of Schiphol Group, which is an operator of airports both in the Netherlands and abroad. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol's ambition is to be and remain Europe's preferred airport. See http://www.schiphol.nl.
