Current exhibition: 'Dutch Girls' Holland’s Golden Top Models
On display at the Rijksmuseum from 7 September through 12 December: 'Dutch Girls'. A portrait gallery of nine prominent ‘models’ from the Dutch Golden Age, immortalised by painters such as Frans Hals, Caesar van Everdingen, Isaack Luttichuys and Bartholomeus van der Helst.
Vanity has always been part of human nature. 17th century women also wanted to look their best, especially when sitting for a portrait. Painters sought to represent their models in the most flattering light, while trying to capture their genuine essence. A great deal of time was spent on the depiction of fashionable and luxurious clothes and intricate jewellery items.
The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol is a unique joint initiative of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The Rijksmuseum is the first museum in the world to have an annex at an airport, while Schiphol is the first airport with a museum in its terminal. The museum was officially opened on 9 December 2002 by His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange.
