Amsterdam Airport Schiphol makes every effort to ensure a secure environment for everyone. To that end, the airport has taken measures to prevent injury to individuals and damage to business assets wherever possible. Schiphol has also developed special rules and regulations to prevent unsafe situations. Moreover, we see our efforts to keep Schiphol safe, orderly and secure as part of an ongoing process.
Safety & Security Pocket Guide
The Safety & Security Pocket Guide for 2008-2009 contains a summary of those rules and regulations. The Pocket Guide consists of a Security section with rules that apply in security-restricted areas (lounges, piers, baggage basements and the airside zone), a Safety section with Airside Safety rules that apply at airside, and a Terminal Safety section with rules for those who work in the Terminal.
The Pocket Guide will help you become more aware of your own safety and security and that of your colleagues and clients. It highlights all sorts of risks and shows you how to improve safety and security in your own work environment. In addition, the Pocket Guide tells you what to do if you become aware of an unsafe or suspect situation, or in the event of a calamity.
Companies can apply for the Pocket Guide via zakboek@schiphol.nl or by sending a fax to the Central Service Desk, 020 601 3660. If you just need one copy, then you can pick one up at your employer, at Access Control (AC) in Triport 2 (passes office) or at the Central Distribution and Collection Point (CUIP) in the F/G corridor in the Terminal. Alternatively, you can download a PDF file via the link below.
Security Test & Airside Safety Test
You need a Schiphol Pass to be able to access security-restricted areas.
| Colour of Schiphol Pass | Access to zone |
| Green | Access to the passenger areas (including the Clean Area) in the Terminal |
| Blue | Access to the perimeter roads at airside |
| Orange | Access to passenger areas in the Terminal and perimeter roads at airside |
| Purple | Access to the Runway 06-24 tunnel |
To obtain a Schiphol Pass, you and your employer will have to satisfy the Schiphol Pass conditions. One of those conditions is that if you plan to work in a security-restricted area, you should successfully complete the Security Test first. If you also need to have access to the perimeter roads and/or aprons at airside, you will additionally have to pass the Airside Perimeter Roads and Apron Safety Test.
Both tests include a number of multiple choice questions about these rules and regulations and their justification. The Security Test comprises ten questions and the Airside Safety Test twelve questions per section. The tests are taken at the Badge Centre, which is where the Schiphol Pass is issued.
The following rules apply to new applications for the Security Test and the Airside Perimeter Roads and Safety Test and the granting of the relevant certificates:
| First attempt successful | The candidate is given a Schiphol Pass. |
| Failed first time | Resit on the same day or the next day, but not later than two months after signing the Schiphol Pass application form. |
| Failed second time | Resit within a month following the first attempt, but not later than two months after signing the Schiphol Pass application form. |
| Failed third time | Resit on the same day or the next day, but not later than two months after signing the Schiphol Pass application form. |
| Failed fourth time | The candidate will not receive a Schiphol Pass. After one year he/she can take the test once again. |
The document entitled "Practice Questions for the Security & Safety Tests" contains a number of questions you may be asked in the Security Test and the Airside Perimeter Roads and Platform Safety Test. You can use the questions to find out exactly what you should do in specific situations, as well as to prepare thoroughly for the tests. These questions can be consulted and printed out from the website.
New employees at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport who will be working on the apron will have to attend the Basic Apron Safety and Security Training course provided by the Schiphol Safety Platform (VpS). The purpose of this training course is to ensure a basic level of safety awareness among new employees at aprons that involve significant safety risks. For frequently asked questions about the training course, see the document entitled "FAQ about Basic Apron Safety & Security Training". These questions can be consulted and printed out from the website.
You can also send any questions about this course to the following e-mail address: vps@schiphol.nl.
